Like the BEF's evacuation from Dunkirk, it has been brought about by dire circumstance. Like the events of 68 years ago, it is an example of the British ability, having got itself into a hole, to cobble together an emergency operation designed to save the situation. And like the Little Ships which pluckily sailed into the hell that was Dunkirk to pick to rescue the troops, it is public-spirited amateurs who are attempting to plug a professional breach. That Bexhill hasn't had a proper Tourist Information Centre for years is, in the estimation of many, both a wasted opportunity and a disgrace. Now, led by indomitable Bexhill in Bloom chairman Sandra Melvin, volunteers are manning the new Info Point. Good-hearted Sandra obtained a shop counter from a closing-down sale and plans to bring her own lap-top to ensure that visitors can be directed to local accommodation. It's only three days a week. It's only a (generously-provided) corner of the Colonnade Coffee House. It cannot hope to compare to the smart, slick, professional TICs operated by other towns in the UK let alone those run as a matter of course by the tiniest of switched-on communities in Continental Europe. But it is a classic British do-it-yourself partial solution to a pressing need. And it is all that we have got. Good luck to Sandra and her fellow volunteers. That's the spirit!
