Mariner's year proves plain sailing at Selsey

Money raised for charities is very important to the members and this year the section raised a total of £699. Charities receiving donations this year include St Wilfrid’s Hospice, Chestnut Tree House, the Selsey Snak Shack and the RNLI, which this year celebrated 150 years of the Selsey lifeboats. The RNLI was the retiring captain’s nominated charity for which he raised £299. The presentation of trophies was made to the winners of the veterans’ 2011 Championship, a 36-hole strokeplay competition. There was a single winner with both the best nett and gross scores – Roger Browell with a gross score of 174 and a nett score of 144. In second place, with a gross score of 187, was Peter Senft (handcap 16) and with a nett score of 154 was Terry Chapman (18). BOGNOR On a sunny and calm November day, 20 juniors played against 20 of their sponsors and supporters in a four-ball better-ball bogey competition off three-quarters handicap. The juniors were leading at the halfway stage but their opponents began to finish strongly. The result of the match depended on the last game, which junior captain Louis Harrison and Scott Bingham lost to Dave Maskell and Ian Stoneham. There were several notable scores by the juniors, in particular from Ryan Breach and David Harris. Nine of the juniors took part in the Junior Captain’s Trophy, sponsored by Louis Harrison. The winner was Tom Stoneham with 39 points. Max Littleboy was second on 38 and Jason Cullen third on 37. Nearest the pin on the fifth was Ryan Breach, and Jake Stoneham was nearest the tenth. Fifteen of the 21 pairs who took part in the Sunday 4BBB Turkey Stableford scored 41 points and over. The winners were Ron Stevens and Gee Fenwick with 46 pts, Stuart McCarthy and David Carter were second on 45, with Mark Willmer and Bob Miller third on 44. Jim Catt and Ivan Towse were fourth on 43 on count back from Peter Stoneham and Vic Vincent. COWDRAY PARK Jill Parry achieved her second hole in one with a magnificent shot on the third hole at Cowdray Park while playing in the ladies’ three-ball better-ball. She kindly supplied wine for the ladies playing on the day. Turkey Trot: 1 Wendy Street 36pts, 2 Joyce Fanshawe 30, 3 Sue Brown 29, 4 Frances Marjoram 28. On a beautiful day, the seniors held their annual fun event, the Elliott Cup, played with two clubs and a putter. Allen Sibley (right) returned to the winner’s enclosure with 37 points. David Laver came second with 36, with former captain Dave Tilley third on 35 and Tony Castley, continuing his return to form, fourth on countback with 33 points. The seniors’ single matchplay final was played between Phil Harrison and Stableford winner Sam Howes. Harrison had to concede nine shots and Howes ran out 3&1 winner. Harrison, though, has won the winter singles, foursomes and the Eclectic.
